How to Resize an Image for a Twitch Emote

Four steps. Nothing to install and no account needed.

1

Add your image

Drop it on the box above or tap Choose image. A square PNG with a transparent background works best, but JPG and WebP work too.

2

Frame it

Not square? Pick Fit to keep all of it or Fill to crop it. Drag the picture and use Zoom to choose what stays.

3

Check the chat preview

Look at your emote at chat size on dark and light chat. If you can't tell what it is, crop closer or simplify the art.

4

Download and upload

Download the ZIP. In your Twitch Creator Dashboard, open Viewer Rewards > Emotes, turn off Auto-resize and add each file to the box for its size.

Twitch Emote Sizes

Every Twitch emote comes in three square sizes. Chat shows emotes at 28 px. Twitch uses the 56 px and 112 px files on sharper screens and wherever emotes appear bigger, so all three should show the same picture.

Rule Still emote
Sizes 112x112, 56x56 and 28x28 px
File type PNG
Shape Square, with the same width and height
Background Fully transparent
Auto-resize upload One image, 112x112 to 4096x4096 px, under 1 MB
Manual upload All three sizes, each under 100 KB

Is the emote file size limit 25 KB?

No. Some sites still say 25 KB, but that is Twitch's limit for sub badges. Emotes can be 1 MB as a single auto-resize image, or 100 KB per file in manual mode. Files from this tool are far under both.

Do You Still Need to Resize Your Emote?

Not always. In auto-resize mode, Twitch takes one square PNG between 112x112 and 4096x4096 px, under 1 MB, and makes the smaller sizes itself. If your art already fits that, you can upload it as it is.

Making the three sizes yourself still helps when:

  • You want control over the 28 px version. Twitch's own guide suggests manual upload if you don't like its automatic results.
  • Your image is not square, is over 1 MB, or is bigger than 4096 px.

Prefer auto-resize? Use this tool to square and shrink your image, then upload only the 112x112 file.

How to Make an Emote That Still Looks Good at 28 px

Most viewers see your emote at 28 by 28 pixels. To keep it readable:

  • Start big. Work at 500 px or more and let the tool shrink it. Enlarging a small image makes it soft.
  • Fill the square. Crop close so the subject reaches near the edges. Empty space is wasted at 28 px.
  • Keep it to one idea. One face, gesture or object. Twitch warns that too much detail or too many words clutter an emote.
  • Use bold shapes and a thick outline. A dark outline and strong contrast keep the shape clear on both dark and light chat.
  • Light photos well. If the emote is a photo, good lighting keeps your expression readable.
  • Check it at real size. Twitch asks you to view emotes at 100% so lines are sharp and letters are correct. The chat preview above does this.

Common Problems and Fixes

The small version looks blurry

Shrinking always loses detail. Tick Sharpen small sizes, crop closer with Zoom and thicken thin lines. If the tool says your image is small, start from a bigger file.

There is a white or black box around the emote

Your image has a solid background, and JPG files can't be transparent. Remove the background in your art app and export a PNG.

Twitch says the file is too large

In auto-resize mode the image must be under 1 MB. Upload the 112x112 file from here instead, which is only a few KB.

The image is not square

Pick Fit to keep the whole picture with see-through space at the sides, or Fill to crop it, then drag to choose which part stays.

My GIF stopped moving

This tool makes still PNGs from the first frame. For an animated emote, upload your original GIF (60 frames at most).

Twitch rejected my emote

Rejections are usually about content, not size. Twitch emails you the reason, and you can change the design and submit again. Read the emote guidelines before you do.

Twitch Sub Badge Sizes

Sub badges are 72x72, 36x36 and 18x18 px, as PNG files under 25 KB each. Switch the tool to Sub badge to make them and preview the badge next to a name in chat.
